I finished this last night and have a question. Towards the end, there was a story about a bottled Kryptonian City. Was that the first appearance of Kandor? I doubt that it was, because there was a quick 4 panel rehash of its shrinking...but then again, this was the Silver Age, where stories sometimes moved that fast. And there was no *asterix/editor's note stating which issue told of Superman's first encounter with Kandor. Speaking of editor's notes...when did those begin? I really miss them nowadays... well, it was the first time that *I* saw Kandor, though the very first published story was in Action (maybe #242 of that series, which was the first Brainiac story, as well). But "The Dictator of Krypton City" was a thrilling story for a 10-year old to read. I remembered it fondly decades later. Believe me, as much as I loved WF Archives #1, it was a long wait for #2. Worth it though. This is one of my absolute favorites of all of the Superman/Batman stories. IP: Logged |

World's Finest #100 was the third appearance of Kandor AKA Krypton City. The first was indeed in Action Comics #242. The second appearance was in Action Comics #245. I have a Superman Encyclopedia, which comes in darn handy for questions like this. Now when do we get our Silver Age Superman Archives reprinting Action #242 and 245? IP: Logged |

Kandor also figures briefly in "The Lady and the Lion" from Action #243, wherein Superman visits Kandor's library in search of a cure for Circe's curse. In the case of "Dictator of Krypton City", Jack Schiff edited World's Finest at the time, so some of the finer details, like the name of that city in the bottle, must have got lost in the translation. In the original "Dictator" story, in the panel where Luthor addresses the Kandorians, he says, "Attention Krytonites!" When I was 9 years old, this really broke me up! Wow, doesn't he know kryptonite is, like, a rock!? Later when the story was reprinted, it was edited to read "Attention Kryptonians!" The first thing i did when i got Archive 2 was to turn to that page to see if they left the original caption. They did. IP: Logged |

quote: I loved that line, too, though I felt that it was an example of Luthor lording it over the citizens of Kandor. After reading this thread last night, I re-read World's Finest Archives #2. What a collection of truly great stories, "The Club of Heroes," "The Menace of the Moon Man," (Wouldn't he have made a good, Earth 1 Dr. Mid-nite revival!), "The Super Sleepers"! Before the creation of the Justice League of America (for those of us not old enough to have known about the JSA), World's Finest truly lived up to its name. IP: Logged |

quote: Good Lord, man! It took me around a year to read it, and you've done it in one night! Of course, I skip around with the archives I'm reading. Reading the last two stories in a row was quite rare for me, however, I enjoyed the first one so much, I had to press on. These stories really are from a fine time in comics. IP: Logged |

WFC 2 is one of those few archives that I managed to speed through in a matter of days. They're all stories I love (many that I read in Giants as a boy). WFC 2 is about my favourite archive of all. IP: Logged |
